Pause. Watch and smile. Enjoy the moments.

Living a hectic life means sometimes forgetting to pause, reflect and just take pleasure in the simple things. My two children, two dogs and three cats ensure I am kept busy but sometimes I need to pause and just relax, ideally with a hot cup of tea and a fresh scone still warm from the oven or perhaps a wine but only if it’s after 12pm ;-). Which means when those heartwarming moments happen I think it is vital to stop and enjoy them. I stay sane by watching those moments, I give them as much time as I can which is sometime only seconds.

I don’t think I have given these ‘moments’ enough time, but since Diesel has been here I have been watching our beautiful animals more, I have always known they have unique personalities but I never really took the time to stop and smile at their honesty. Tiger-Lilly is a tricky personality to characterise, she is a little crazy at times but she is so cuddly and friendly and she accepted Diesel from day one.

Tiger-Lilly is Gorgeous! There is no denying it, okay she has a little weight issue but hey, who doesn’t. I watched Tiger-Lilly and Diesel play in the sun, it is these moments that I love as a pet owner. I love it how animals put a smile on our faces by just being their honest selves.

Was she flirting?

Hmmm I think she is.

Yes that is definitely what I think a cat looks like when they are flirting. Diesel’s new adventure is clearly all about keeping his two favorite girls Tiger-Lilly and Shadow happy and he has them wrapped around his little finger paw.

Diesel works his Magic.

Cats are solitary creatures, the only ‘cat species’ to live in a pack are lions, we (cat owners) often have more than one cat but is this what they want? Does it make them happy? Well living with two gorgeous females seems to be making Diesel happy.

Shadow joined our family when Ruth from the Queenstown Cat Rescue told me about this beautiful cat that was left behind with her brother. Somehow, someone decided she wasn’t worth keeping, they left, just drove away one day never to return. I said to Ruth that I was interesting in a grey cat and grey she was. She is a little angel, I adore her and slowly Diesel and her are becoming friends.

She played hard to get at the start keeping her distance, she isn’t the kind of cat to jump into situations without thought, she is intelligent. She is loyal, non-cat owners don’t believe that cats can be loyal but they can, you just have to work harder, you have to earn it.

She flat-out refused to acknowledge him at the start………….

Diesel worked his magic, he inched closer and closer. Shadow however looked away giving the illusion she was uninterested. They were behaving like a couple of school kids, you know the old, I’m going to pretend I don’t like you trick. Yet neither of them ever hissed or growled, there wasn’t even the slightest sign of a hair being raised.

BOO! Oh Diesel, perhaps the art of surprise is not the right ‘move’ to use to woo her. Darn it! All that hard work was lost, he blew it. Diesel takes rejection well and their love story continues, how long it will take? Well that remains to be seen.

Valentines Day Photo Shoot 2003

Valentines Day 2003!

This was a photo ‘The Southland Times’ included in an article they were doing promoting Valentines Day. Diesel was only about thirteen weeks old and as you can see from the photo it was before his tail was amputated. He was like a little child actor, hopeful and eager. He worked with the photographer, tilting his head, reaching with his paw and flicking his tail. He was comfortable advertising himself and he loved the attention, this was his first time in the spot light and he loved it.  They were using him because of his ‘heart shaped black patch’ on his side, the title for the article was ‘He wears his heart on the outside’.

Is Diesel settled in here? Does he look happy? I think it is safe to say he is at HOME here.

Okay just now, as I was spell checking and editing this post, Ty dropped his plate of fruit on the floor right beside Diesel. The fruit and plate hit the wooden floor with an echoing bang and Diesel casually stood up to check out what the commotion was, glared unimpressed at Ty before turning twice and relaxing into the exact same position. So yes I think he is sliding back into family life without hesitation and we are all so very happy to have him.

Friday Night Fun

Yup, it’s Friday whoop whoop! The week-end has begun and for most, the fun has already started. For me that means enjoying a quiet bottle of my new favorite drink……..Rekorderlig’s Strawberry and lime Cider, yum. Diesel however has enjoyed a relaxing Friday afternoon doing what cats do best, nothing. Well he possibly groomed himself and moved around the house following the sun but all in all, he did nothing and I can’t blame him, in fact I am jealous.

A scratch pole, yes a simple wooden structure surrounded with carpet and a dense woven pad, oh and a very enticing hanging ball, is all it takes to entertain Diesel and his new friends for hours. They think this ‘toy’ is there for their pleasure and amusement but little do they know, I really put it there for the sole purpose of protecting my couch from there wickedly sharp claws. Okay it does both jobs, we are all happy, so with cider in hand I watch, I watch as these three ‘friends’ interact and play.

Diesel and Shadow played while Tiger-Lilly watched from the top position, perhaps slightly unimpressed with their rowdy behaviour.

As soon as I got close enough to get a great shot, I interrupted their play, Diesel froze and Shadow backed away out of shot, I found this very frustrating.

Okay play time is over, it’s been a hard day, time to relax.

Drink water from a bowl. Yeah Right.

Most cats hate drinking water from a bowl, it seems below them to be drinking from something that has been sitting there all day. Fresh water is the only option and if I really think about it I don’t blame them, I too enjoy my water fresh, cool and if possible with a slice of lemon. Okay, so a slice of lemon might be going too far if you are a cat but Diesel feels that requesting demanding running water is perfectly reasonable and thinks how dare I deny him, um how dare I deny him, anything.

“Cats seem to go on the principle that it never does any harm to ask for what you want” – Joseph Wood Krutch

Diesel jumped on the bench and started sniffing at the faucet. I knew what he wanted and I don’t really want him in the habit of jumping on my bench but in a moment of weakness, as I looked into his adorable eyes, I did it, I did it against my better judgement because now I am sure he is going to demand it everyday. Shadow already jumps up on the bathroom sink while I am brushing my teeth, so maybe I can train Diesel to do the same. It is more acceptable for him to jump on the bathroom bench than the kitchen but I guess if no one is around no one will know, it can be Diesel and I’s little secret………..oh and yours.

Diesel, I love you. But your hair is driving me CRAZY.

I am an animal lover, I enjoy sitting down at the end of a long day to relax after my kids are in bed with my cat’s and dog’s as company. It is on those quiet nights that I can get lost in my thoughts, I feel truly relaxed. People who share their lives with animals will understand what I mean, this is the reason I have pets, they give back something that money can’t buy, they add something to our lives that is more than just companionship, It’s not just pet ownership, its friendship, its respect.

Diesel was very mellow last night, going outside and exploring was just want he needed. He came inside just in time to compete with the other two cats for the scraps of chicken I didn’t want to use in the sushi I was making for dinner – the sushi I enjoyed but my daughter thought was “the worst dinner ever”. Scraps were gratefully received, eaten then lips licked to ensure all juices were savoured.

Diesel first retired to the couch alone, he curled up, he stretched out, he looked how I feel when I am stretched out relaxing on that couch, he looked content. While the kids and I rushed around getting all the before bedtime routines done, he lay there, happy, relax, he hardly moved, except for the odd meow of disapproval at the noise we were making.

Once I was able to also retire to the couch, Diesel was all over me. He behaved like he had not had affection all week, he wasn’t happy with just sitting on me, I had to be actively patting him. If I stopped stroking him he would stand up again, reposition himself and somehow force me, without words, without actually asking me but somehow I was always back patting him again.

I like the colour black, a large majority of my clothes are black, black’s slimming, black’s neutral and therefore goes well with a splash of another colour if I feel so inclined. However I am quickly remembering, due to the fact that Diesel is always sitting on my knee that Diesel’s white, oh so very white hair goes everywhere and is seen on EVERYTHING. I love him, I love my cuddles but damn his hair is driving me  crazy.

Hello Sun! My how I have missed you.

What a beautiful day in paradise it was here today. It was one of those days that mother nature got the balance between breeze and sunshine, just perfect. Diesel relaxed on Ty’s bed after inhaling break-fast so fast that he left me a wee present of regurgitated biscuits of my………luckily wooden floor, nice! But after his much-needed rest, because it’s hard work the walk from the kitchen to the bedroom and leaping up onto the bed,  Diesel felt frisky.

He was running around from one bedroom to the next, now we don’t live in a huge house, so it was clear to me he NEEDED to go outside and burn all that excess energy off. I needed to hang the washing out, boring I know but to be fair no one else was going to do it for me, so I left the front door open and crossed me fingers he was finally ready to explore his new yard.

He did not hesitate, not even for a second, I think he beat me out to the washing line. It was great to see him exploring his new surroundings, I couldn’t help but feel nervous as he disappeared from sight into the neighbour’s yard. My nervousness did not last long, he soon popped up from beyond the fence, stalking an innocent butterfly – which he did not catch.
